May 6th to 12th is National Nurses Week! During Nurses Week, we celebrate the compassionate professionals who walk beside injured workers every step of the way.
At Beacon Mutual, we know that a workplace injury can be overwhelming—physically, emotionally, and financially. That’s why our team includes internal Nurse Case Managers who provide more than just clinical support—they offer guidance, advocacy, and peace of mind during what is often one of the most difficult times in someone’s life.
In honor of Nurses Week, we sat down with one of our incredible Nurse Case Managers to talk about what inspires her, how she supports injured workers, and why this work matters. With decades of experience and a deep personal connection to the workers’ compensation journey, her insights are a testament to the power of empathy and expert care.
From Patient to Professional: A Personal Path to Nursing
Like many nurses, her journey into the profession was inspired by personal experience.
“I had sustained several knee injuries playing sports in high school and college,” she shared. “In 1981, I had arthroscopic surgery and was in the hospital for four days. The care I received from the nurses really stayed with me—it made me want to help people the way they helped me.”
Her decision to specialize in workers’ compensation case management also stems from lived experience:
“While working as an RN in a hospital, I sustained a work-related injury while lifting a patient. During my recovery, I worked with a Rehabilitation Nurse who helped coordinate my care. Having been both a nurse and an injured worker, this field felt like the perfect fit. Things do happen for a reason!”
Collaboration and Compassion in Action
Nurse Case Managers are essential liaisons between the injured worker, medical providers, employers, and claims staff. Their focus? Helping people heal—not just physically, but holistically.
“One of my first cases at Beacon involved a young woman with Down syndrome who had a significant injury. It was clear she needed more than a routine recovery plan. With support from her physician, rehab team, family, and me—we created a comprehensive care plan. Eventually, she returned to work and gained more independence. Her parents were so grateful. It reminded me why this work matters.”
More Than Medicine: Advocacy That Makes a Difference
What many don’t realize is just how much these nurses do beyond clinical coordination.
“The role of the Nurse Case Manager can go far beyond medical treatment,” she explained. “We help injured workers navigate the healthcare system, get timely treatment, manage pharmacy issues, support their families, and explain physician recommendations in ways that make sense. It’s about being there, being present, and being their advocate.”
When asked what she wished more people knew about her work, she didn’t hesitate:
“That our role is primarily to be a patient advocate.”
