At Beacon Mutual, we believe in more than insurance. We believe in and focus on what matters most: people. The values that guide our work every day, including Commit to Care, Impact Our Community, Do the Right Thing, Embrace Inclusion, and Be Remarkable, shape how we support one another and how we show up in the community.

This year, one of our colleagues, Christina B., turned personal hardship into hope, compassion, and meaningful action. Her story reflects the heart of who we are at Beacon.

When One Life Changes, Many Lives Can Too

After a difficult chapter in 2024, Christina returned to Beacon with gratitude and determination. During her recovery, she made a promise to herself: “If I were given another year, I would use it to lift others up.”

Her journey led her back to Blood Cancer United (BCU), the nonprofit that stood by her during an emotional and uncertain time. When BCU invited her to join the Executive Committee for the 2025 Light the Night Walk, she accepted with one goal in mind. She told the BCU team, “I want to turn what I went through into something that brings hope to someone else.”

Beacon Showing Up Together as Community

Christina invited the Beacon community to join her mission. With support from our BeaWell Committee, colleagues, family, and friends, she helped lead a special fundraising event at Beacon. The day included a car wash, a 50/50 raffle, a visit from BCU, and an opportunity for employees to hear Christina’s story in her own words. Beacon contributed a $2,500 sponsorship, and a supporting partner added $1,000.

What made the day truly meaningful was the kindness and generosity of Beacon employees. People donated, volunteered, showed up, and demonstrated the power of community support.

Christina also organized a second fundraiser at the Galilee Beach Club. She secured 60 raffle prizes, partnered with nine food sponsors, and created an evening full of connection and support. Because the event costs were covered, every dollar raised went directly to BCU. Together, the two events raised an impressive $22,575.

Part of a Larger Commitment to Community

Christina’s efforts are inspiring, and they represent one of many ways Beacon supports the community throughout the year.

Beacon employees volunteer annually through our company-wide Week of Service, supporting organizations such as the Rhode Island Community Food Bank, animal shelters, youth programs, senior support organizations, environmental groups, and emergency shelters.

Beacon Mutual also supports employee giving through a matching donation program, matching charitable contributions up to $250 each year. This encourages employees to support causes they care about and make a positive impact in their communities.

We also highlight seasonal and community-based giving, such as our Thanksgiving Gratitude and Giving Back initiative, which supports food banks and organizations that serve families across Rhode Island.

These programs, combined with personal employee-led efforts like Christina’s, reflect Beacon’s ongoing commitment to helping people and strengthening communities.

Why This Matters and Why We Are Proud

“Christina’s story shows the impact one person can make and how a supportive workplace can help that impact grow,” said Brian Spero, President & CEO of Beacon Mutual. “Her leadership reflects the values we strive to live every day, and her efforts have made a meaningful difference for families facing blood cancer.

“We are incredibly proud of Christina and grateful to every Beacon employee who donated, volunteered, encouraged, or helped support this effort. Because of your involvement, individuals and families in our community will receive essential support when they need it most.”

Beacon is committed to caring for our policyholders, our employees, and our communities. We look forward to continuing this work and sharing more stories of compassion, impact, and hope.
